At Biodesign, we specialize in providing scoliosis braces designed to support spinal health and improve quality of life. Whether for growing adolescents or managing degenerative scoliosis, our custom orthotic solutions help prevent curve progression and reduce discomfort.
About Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine involving rotation of the vertebrae (transverse plane), side-to-side curvature (frontal plane) and changes in the natural forward or backward curves of the spine (sagittal plane)
There are three main types of scoliosis:
- Congenital scoliosis – caused by a spinal or skeletal deformity present at birth
- Neuromuscular scoliosis – associated with an underlying neurological or muscular condition, such as cerebral palsy, polio, or spina bifida
- Idiopathic scoliosis – scoliosis with no clearly identifiable cause
Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common form, accounting for approximately 80–90% of cases. Within this group, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is most frequently seen, particularly in girls during their growth spurt.
Understanding Scoliosis Bracing:
The primary goals of scoliosis bracing are to:
- Maintain or improve spinal alignment
- Prevent or slow the progression of spinal curvature
- Reduce the likelihood or delay the need for surgical intervention
A scoliosis brace is designed using a three-point pressure system, incorporating strategically placed pads that apply corrective forces to the spine while allowing controlled movement and growth.
- TLSO (Thoracic-Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis): A lightweight, low-profile brace that fits comfortably under clothing. A TLSO is typically used to manage curves in the mid to lower spine, offering strong support while maintaining a discreet appearance.
- CTLSO (Cervical-Thoracic-Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis): Designed to support not only the lower spine but also the upper back, neck, and sometimes the head. This brace can include a metal framework for extra stability, making it ideal for more complex spinal needs.

What to Expect at Your Consultation:
During your consultation, we will begin by discussing your medical history, including the onset of the spinal curvature, any other diagnoses, and current or previous treatment plans.
A visual and hands-on assessment will then be completed to evaluate posture, spinal alignment, and movement. If available, we encourage you to bring any recent X-rays or imaging provided by your healthcare team, as this allows for a more accurate understanding of the spinal curvature and internal alignment.
Once the assessment is complete, we will discuss brace design options, treatment goals, and what to expect throughout the bracing process. To gather precise measurements, we will perform either a 3D scan or a custom circumferential fiberglass cast of the torso.
After the brace is fabricated, a fitting appointment will be scheduled to ensure proper fit, comfort, and function. Ongoing follow-up appointments will be arranged as needed to monitor progress and make adjustments.
