Sport Knee Braces

Used by athletes to protect the knee during high-impact or quick-movement activities. They can help prevent injury, support weak or previously injured knees, and provide confidence during sports.

In high-impact and high-speed sports like motocross, football, skiing, and basketball, the knee is at constant risk of injury from sudden twists, impacts, and overextension. Sports knee braces are specially designed to stabilize, protect, and support the knee during aggressive movements, and to help prevent or manage ligament injuries (like ACL, MCL, or meniscus damage).

Here’s a breakdown of common types:

1. Motocross Knee Braces

Protect against extreme impacts, twisting, and hyperextension during crashes or hard landings.

Mechanics:

  • Rigid Outer Frames: Typically made from strong materials like carbon fibre, aluminium, or reinforced plastic, these braces act like an external exoskeleton. They absorb and distribute the forces from impacts away from the knee joint.
  • Hinges: Specially designed hinges mimic the natural movement of the knee (flexion and extension) while limiting dangerous side-to-side or twisting motions that can tear ligaments.
  • Hyperextension Stops: Many motocross braces have mechanical stops built into the hinges that prevent the knee from extending too far backward, which protects the ACL and PCL from rupture.
  • Compression Straps: Adjustable straps secure the brace to the thigh and calf, ensuring it stays firmly in place even during intense movement and vibration.

Commonly Used Brands: Asterisk, CTi, POD, Mobius.

2. Contact Sport Knee Braces

Protect the knee from contact injuries (like helmet hits to the side of the knee) and rotational stresses during cutting, pivoting, or tackling.

Mechanics:

  • Lateral and Medial Reinforcements: Contact sport braces often include strong sidebars or metal uprights on each side of the knee, which guard against valgus (inward collapse) and varus (outward collapse) forces that can injure the MCL or LCL.
  • Flexible, Lightweight Frames: Built to be strong yet flexible enough to not restrict running or sprinting, frames are often made of aircraft-grade aluminium or carbon composite.
  • Custom Fitting: Some players use custom-moulded braces that contour to their leg for a secure fit, minimising sliding or rotation during play.
  • Pivot Point Hinges: Advanced hinge systems allow smooth, natural knee bending while controlling unwanted lateral or rotational motion.

Commonly Used Brands: DonJoy, Breg, Ossur, McDavid.
