Clinical Services Overview for
Referring Physicians
At Biodesign, we partner with physicians to deliver advanced orthotic and prosthetic care with a patient-centered approach. Our multidisciplinary team provides evaluation, design, and long-term follow-ups across a range of conditions. Below is an overview of the key services we offer and how we can support your patients’ care plans.
Why Refer to Biodesign?
- Our team of experienced, credentialed clinicians specializing in patient-centered orthotic and prosthetic care
- Collaborative approach with physicians to ensure continuity and clarity in treatment
- Quick turnaround times, on-site adjustments, and flexible scheduling
- Commitment to outcomes, comfort, and long-term patient success
We welcome physician inquiries and are happy to provide consultation notes, progress updates, and any documentation needed for coordinated care.
Prosthetic Referrals
For patients with limb loss, early referral improves education, psychological readiness, and post-op outcomes. We provide:
- Preoperative consultations to discuss prosthetic options and expectations
- Postoperative prosthetic care with early socket fittings, shrinker education, and gradual prosthetic loading
- Upper and lower limb prosthetics, including myoelectric and microprocessor components
- Ongoing adjustments and maintenance for comfort and function
Orthotic Services
Our orthotic care begins with a detailed biomechanical assessment, incorporating patient goals and functional needs. We provide both off-the-shelf and custom-designed orthoses, ranging from simple support devices to complex, multi-joint bracing systems. Common orthoses include:
- Lower extremity: AFOs, KAFOs, SMOs for gait instability, foot drop, knee hyperextension, and more.
- Upper extremity: Wrist-hand orthoses, elbow braces, and positioning splints.
- Spinal orthoses: TLSOs, LSOs, and cervical collars for post-surgical stabilization and scoliosis
- Protective and Cranial Remodeling Orthoses
Our team ensures devices are lightweight, functional, and easy to don/doff, promoting adherence and comfort.
Pediatric Services
Biodesign has extensive experience in pediatric orthotics and prosthetics, providing solutions that evolve with the child. We treat a wide range of diagnoses including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, limb differences, neuromuscular disorders, and more.
We prioritize family education, developmental milestones, and adjustability to accommodate rapid growth. Our pediatric offerings include:
- Cranial Remolding Helmets Visit our Helmet page ▸
- Custom AFOs, SMOs, KAFOs Visit our Bracing page ▸
- Upper limb prostheses Visit our Upper Limb Prosthetics page ▸
- Pediatric socket systems for early prosthetic use
- On-site adjustments and repairs
- Long-term follow-up for continuity of care
Plagiocephaly Management
We offer helmet therapy for infants with positional plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and scaphocephaly. Early intervention is key; we encourage referrals as early as 4 months, though we treat up to ~18 months depending on severity.
Our cranial remolding orthoses are lightweight, custom-fitted, and designed for optimal head shape correction.
Bracing Indications for Physicians
Physicians often ask: When should I prescribe a brace? Below are common clinical scenarios where orthotic intervention may improve outcomes:
- Lower limb instability (e.g., foot drop, genu recurvatum) → Consider AFOs or KAFOs
- Scoliosis or post-operative spinal support → TLSO, LSO
- Joint pain or instability from arthritis or ligament laxity → Functional joint bracing
- Neurological conditions (stroke, MS, CP) → Functional bracing for improved gait/mobility
- Developmental delay → Pediatric SMOs/AFOs for foot/ankle alignment
We’re always available for pre-prescription consults to help determine appropriate bracing.
Diabetic Foot Management
Biodesign specializes in diabetic bracing and foot protection to reduce the risk of ulceration and lower limb amputation. We provide:
- Custom-molded diabetic foot orthoses for pressure redistribution
- CROW (Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker) boots for Charcot arthropathy management
- Toe-off and partial foot prostheses post-amputation
- Footwear recommendations and AFOs for patients with peripheral neuropathy or deformity
